What actually changed for storage

Tahoe brought a new look (the “Liquid Glass” redesign) and deeper Apple Intelligence, but under the hood your disk works the same way it did on Sequoia. The two things worth knowing in 2026:

• Apple Intelligence now ships on-device models that occupy several gigabytes — see the dedicated guide.
• The Settings layout moved things around, so the old “About → Storage” muscle memory is out of date.

Where the built-in tools are now

1. Open System Settings → General → Storage.
2. The bar at the top breaks down usage; hover segments to see categories.
3. Under Recommendations you'll find Store in iCloud, Optimise Storage, and Empty Trash Automatically.

These are genuinely useful for photos and documents, but they don't touch caches, snapshots or developer files — which is usually where the real space is.

The safe wins that still work

None of the fundamentals changed, so the same honest checklist applies:

• App caches in ~/Library/Caches.
• Developer artifacts — DerivedData, node_modules, local AI models.
• Purgeable snapshots — leave them; macOS thins them for you.
• The Trash — empty it to commit the space.

The System Data question, again

Tahoe still lumps caches, logs, snapshots and AI models into System Data. If that bucket looks huge after upgrading, it's usually the new Apple Intelligence models plus the upgrade's own leftover caches — both normal, both explained in those guides.
