Why an AI feature needs disk space at all

Unlike cloud assistants, Apple Intelligence does most of its work on your Mac. That's the privacy win — your requests don't all leave the device — but it means the models have to live locally. The models sit in system-managed asset storage (under /System/Library and the private asset caches macOS controls). This is not a folder to go digging in — it's protected by System Integrity Protection, and deleting files there by hand can break the feature or the OS.

How to reclaim the space — the honest way

If you genuinely use Apple Intelligence, that 7 GB is doing its job; treat it like any other app you rely on. If you don't, reclaim it by turning the feature off, which tells macOS to remove the downloaded models:

1. Open System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
2. Turn Apple Intelligence off.
3. macOS removes the on-device models over the following minutes; the space returns to “available”.

Turning it back on later simply re-downloads them. Removing unused languages (in the same pane, and under Keyboard) trims the footprint without disabling the feature entirely.

What not to do

• Don't delete anything inside /System by hand to “remove the AI”.
• Don't expect Optimise Storage or emptying the Trash to touch it — the models aren't user files.
• Don't confuse this with local AI models you installed yourself (Ollama, LM Studio) — those are separate, much larger, and genuinely safe to delete.
